Social Media and Childhood

Social media, we can’t live with it and we can’t live without it. This debate topic is very interesting, especially after the whole Facebook and Cambridge Analytica thing going on right now. If it is having such an impact on our lives, what is it doing to the lives of our students?

The jury is still out about social media, the reviews are mixed and I think it all boils down to moderation. Moderation seems to be the theme for the semester and I think moderation in our use and consumption of social media is key.

One side of the social media split argues that social media makes our children less happy about certain aspects of their lives (school work, the school they attend, their appearance, family and life overall), but it does have a positive impact on how they feel towards their friends.

Another argument is that social media can be a force for good. It can help build and maintain social relationships (including family relationships- Facebook is how I communicate with most of my family nowadays- they don’t like paying for phone calls to Canada that often) and allows people to access news and information. I know I check Twitter for power outages in my area and to see what is going on in the world today.
