The first thing I thought when I read this question was the following image from WALL-E.
Technology use creates people who are more sedentary who sleep less. According to Digital Technology Can Be Harmful to Your Health people used to sleep about 8 1/2 hours per night, but with people using their devices before bedtime, that number has been reduced to less than 7 hours.
The problem is that the bright light reduces the production of melatonin- the hormone that regulates sleep. In addition to the reduction of melatonin, light also increases ghrelin which is the hormone that regulates hunger. In short, we are sleeping less and wanting to eat more.
Not only are we getting less sleep, we have less face-to-face interaction with our peers. According to one study, college students felt closest to their friends during face-to-face interaction, however; they primarily communicate via text message. So… we are sleep deprived, hungry (or quite possibly overweight/obese) and lonely.
What can we do?
- Create sacred spaces within the home (such as the bedroom)
- Reduce screen time at night
- Enforce both of the above with children
- Get away from the desk every hour (It is good to walk around, take a brain break)
- Utilize technology to be healthier
Overall, I don’t think technology has made us unhealthy, it is our choices and how we use technology that affect our health.
